EnglishA warm welcome also to all of you who don’t understand a word of Swedish but still wish to know more about Pingvin Rugby Club, its Teams and its activities.

Pingvin rugby club was founded in 1962 by players who were tired of travelling to Malmö to play rugby. Noteworthy amonst those first rugby enthusiasts were Wolfgang Österling who also became the club’s first chairman.

As rugby clubs over the world often are associated with animals, the new Trelleborg rugby players agreed on the name Pingvin. There were two reasons for this:

  1. Wolfgang was in contact and associated with the UK representation team The Penguins
  2. live penguins lived at that time at the Trelleborg town park.
What could be more suitable than the name Pingvin Rugby Club?

1963 was the first year Pingvin played in the Swedish Championship series and the home arena for PRC was Järavallen at that time – an open pitch only 30 metres from the beach and constantly besieged by wind. Pingvin trained at Järavallen through many years of rain, sunshine, wind and salt water drenched stray balls. In 1970 Pingvin got its first club rooms on Algatan in the town centre, which ofd course was used to plan match tactics, eat and play successful third halves.

At the beginning of the 1980s, new and bigger club rooms were arranged in the cellar on Valldammsgatan. During this time a new arena was arranged at Pilevallen, where Pingvin has played ever since.

The rugby playing gents were joined by ladies in 1983 as Pingvin founded its first ladies team.

An independent clubhouse was built during the end of the 80s and all members toiled hard to get it completed. A much wanted stand was later built by the town council, which was suitably baptised ” Wolfgang Österling’s Stand”.

Pingvin Rugby Club has earned its name and respect in rugby Sweden with 11 Swedish Championships for the Senior First XV, 2 Swedish Championships for its senior Ladies, 2 U19 Swedish Championships and several Swedish Championships for the Youth Teams. The list of Pingvin players in the Swedish National Team is extensive as in the Swedish list of Stora Grabbar (”Big Boys” in rugby).
