U16s win Swedish International Tournament
Monday 18th August 2014
|Maidenhead’s U16s visited Pingvin of Sweden on a pre-season tour 15-18th Aug to attend their international tournament. The boys enjoyed overwhelming hospitality from their hosts with lads and parents hosted by Pingvin players families.
The ”99ers” took only 13 to a 12-a-side tournament and were immediately down to 12 players after their first game with a Maids player damaging his shoulder. On the Saturday the lads played and beat a Danish team, followed by Pingvin and then a German side where the game was ”tasty” in the extreme. By the end of the day we had another four feeling the game and wanting more!
After the usual tour overnight ”non-rest” the boys had THE game against another German side who had also won all their games on the Sat so 1st and 2nd place were being contested! Maids Mgr, after falling over from the shock at their ”mature looks” and size discreetly asked the tournament organisers if ages had been checked and the hosts embarrassingly admitted the Germans were not keen to produce passports ”but had written their player’s ages down on a sheet of A4”! The hosts were adamant all ok to proceed so Maids took to the field.
The mighty 99ers took to the field with only 12 (one, on his return, was found to have a ”boxers fracture”, perhaps a somewhat apt description) against some seriously big and powerful lads. We had 3 A team players in the backs and to a man the B forwards were down 4-5 stones!
What a game and what a battle; Maids showed total commitment and out-thought, out-skilled and beat the Germans by a try to nil….!! Anyone would have been proud of our lads as they put in tackle after tackle knocking down the big boys and out-rucked them with better technique. We out-passed them and were quicker over the pitch throughout. The boys did Maidenhead Rugby club proud!
Pingvin supported their guests throughout and cheered us all the way and then laid on a winners banquet on the last night – it was agreed by all the lads; best tour thus far, best hospitality ever experienced and proves within the rugby community there is a real camaraderie – we can’t wait to host Pingvin should they visit us again……
As well as playing international teams Maids also undertook a truly international itinerary visiting the world famous Malmo Music and Food Festival on the Friday and a day sightseeing in Copenhagen on their return.
